It was bound to happen eventually, though I figured he would get past Werdum first. For those who don't know, Fedor lost last night at 1:09 in Round 1 to Fabricio Werdum. This is his first real loss ever. He knocked Werdum down and basically just made a stupid mistake of rushing down to finish the fight, and ended up punching his way into an armbar, and then into a triangle choke that he could not escape from.

So what does this mean? Well, Strikeforce is in even more trouble this year because the mystique surrounding their highest paid fighter is largely gone. They were hoping to sell an Alistair Overeem vs Fedor PPV, and now that can't happen. Ratings for their championship fight will likely be lower as well. No one even knows who Werdum is, honestly. Even after beating Fedor he couldn't sell a PPV or make people buy showtime to see his fight.

Does it mean Fedor is done? I don't think so. He is getting older, but everyone loses sometime. Remember that Georges St Pierre lost to Matt Serra in one of the biggest upsets ever, but quickly came back and hasn't lost since.

It's always disappointing to see a fighter like this lose, but it had to happen eventually.

I'm disappointed he lost to Werdom also, but hey everyone gets caught. Remember when Anderson Silva got caught with that flying heel hook back in the day? I don't know that it means Fedor's ready to retire. He's said as much. He wants to finish his contract with Strikeforce. From then, who knows? The guy can still compete at a high level and I'd still like to see him in the UFC. We'll see what happens I guess.

I think his next fight will be telling. Was this just a fluke or is his career winding down?
