It looks like DiPietro's deal isn't front-loaded, though. That's why the NHL rejected Kovalchuk's deal - he was playing the last few years for like $500,000 a year, which drove down the average annual salary, which is apparently the number that is used against a team's salary cap. From that perspective, I agree with the NHL - they were trying to circumvent the cap with a BS contract. That said, they need to change that and use whatever amount the player is earning that year as his salary cap number...problem fixed.
