Browns tender restricted free agents (ClevelandBrowns.com)

Surprising to see some of these so low.  In REALLY simple terms, when a team tenders restricted free agents, they have to make a "qualifying offer" of a contract to that player (there are minimums that they have to offer) and then they place a tag on that player regarding draft picks (it can range from a 1st and a 3rd round pick to the round in which the player was drafted depending upon various factors).  If the player receives an offer from another team, the original team (in this case the Browns) has seven days to match it or the player is signed with the new team and the Browns receive that team's draft picks (all of these guys would be second round picks).

In particular, D'Qwell Jackson and Jerome Harrison I would have thought would have been tendered higher, first round picks.  Jackson is coming off an injury, but he's been consistent and Harrison exploded as soon as he got a chance to play.

Trusnik signs tender, Heiden released (ClevelandBrowns.com)

Local boy Jason Trusnik will be staying with the team, while perennial Brown Steve Heiden leaves.

Trusnik did a nice job last year, after the Browns got him from the Jets and was a big contributor on special teams.

Heiden was what he was and with the Browns signing Watson from New England, it was obvious that Heiden wasn't long for this team.  he was a good player and definitely a good character guy, but last year's injury had to make one start wondering how much time he had left in him.

Cleveland Browns notify RFAs of reduced offers (Cleveland.com)

I meant to post this a while back but I'm lazy and forgetful.

It's an interesting strategy.  As the article states, teams almost never do this because all it does is piss players off.  Apparently Mike Holmgren is letting people know that the good old days are over.  This is business, this is your job, now get to work.  On the one hand, there's little to be gained from antagonizing the talent that you have.  On the other hand, we've seen what happens when you let these things drag on and fester.

Not surprisingly, the "threat" worked: Jackson under contract for 2010 (ESPN.com) and pretty much all of the holdouts signed the next day.

Good for them. I'm tired of all these overpaid athletes whining about their money when they make more than any of us will see in our entire lives. I read that article and the amount that the team was going to cut it to shows just how overpaid these guys are. I'm glad that most of them seemed to just see it as a business move too. I haven't heard much about guys grumbling like other teams have to deal with and like the Browns have had to for the last couple of years.
