Indians 2010 Record: 41-57
Fausto Carmona dominated the Rays for five innings - yielding only one hit and an unearned run - before the rains came and delayed the game for 90 minutes, with the Indians holding a 2-1 advantage on the strength of two Michael Brantley runs. The Rays, thrilled to get Carmona out of the game after the delay, then saw Tony Sipp throw two hitless innings, while Trevor Crowe connected for a solo home run, before the rains came back in the seventh. Nearing midnight, the game was called in the bottom of the seventh and the Indians got a rain-shortened 18th straight home win against the Rays.
Shin-Soo Choo doubled in Trevor Crowe and Shelley Duncan connected for a two run home run to get the Indians off to a 3-0 start against David Price. Mitch Talbot, on the other hand, retired the first eight batters he faced, including six straight strikeouts. Price was able to turn up the heat and rein in the Tribe batters after his shaky start - retiring 11 in a row at one point - while Talbot faltered down the stretch. Ben Zobrist tied the game with a video replay home run in the fifth and the Rays tacked on three more unanswered runs to snap their 18 game losing streak in Cleveland.
The Indians returned to their earlier offensive ways, struggling to score runs. Carlos Santana drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Andy Marte drove in another on a fielder's choice, but that didn't hold up in the face of four runs (three earned) by the Rays against Justin Masterson.
After winning six of their first seven games following the All-Star break on the road, the team came home and fell flat. Two more unearned runs for the defense and an offense that is hitting for average better than they did earlier this season but can't get those hits when they need them - the team is mired in a 1 for 26 slump with batters in scoring position. Asdrubal Cabrera and Shin-Soo Choo have returned and may be shaking off some rust, but this team was playing well after the break and has added back two key pieces. They're better than this series and hopefully will be able to show that the rest of the way.
