The Cavs traded Delonte West and Sebastian Telfair to the Timberwoves for Ramon Sessions, Ryan Hollins and a 2013 draft pick.
Delonte was going to be traded to somebody and it was going to happen soon. He's still facing possible league suspension, he's ad a ton of problems and distractions off the court and his contract is very team-friendly. If he's waived by next week (which he will be), the team only has to pay him $500,000. That made a good number of teams want him so they could free up some cash. Sebastian Telfair was a throw-in player in the Antawn Jamison trade. He's an average point guard that had some good minutes at the end of last season for the Cavs, but wasn't going to be anything more than a guy off the bench.
Ramon Sessions is a promising young point guard. He shoots well and moves the ball well, both in terms of pushing it up the floor and distributing it. He was completely misused last year in Minnesota, which is why he sort of fell off the radar. He's a nice fit for Byron Scott's offense, which is more concerned with moving the ball up and down the floor and creating multiple attack lanes to the basket. The days of bringing the ball up to the top of the key and then dribbling out the shot clock before LeBron drives the lane are gone.
Hollins is a question mark. He has yet to impress, but has the tools. He's an athletic center and the one thing that he DOES do is give this team some size in the frontcourt, which they desperately need. He may turn into a pretty serviceable center in this league yet, but he's here to give the team size and shore up the position as a stopgap.
Why they keep trading for draft picks three years into the future, I have no idea.
It's not a bad trade. It's certainly more "future oriented" than most of the trades this team has made over the past few years. We're officially rebuilding, but I don't think that phase will drag on like it has with the Indians. The Cavs have enough talent and upside to compete most nights now. They aren't going to challenge for an NBA title this year, but I still think they're a playoff team and maybe a six/seven seed at that.
