Basically it's the owner explaining that the public needs to pay the rent for the Blue Jackets because the Blue Jackets are losing money because of it.
The reality though is that tax payers voted down the arena. The economy is hard hit, and the last thing anyone wants to do is fork over to support a losing team.
I just don't see city leaders finding money in their budget to pay for it. Nationwide isn't going to let them play for free. So then what? They could take it to a vote, but they already voted and said, "No" and I doubt folks in Columbus would vote yet to a Cleveland like Sin tax.
So what happens?
Based on everything I've read, I think the Jackets will move out of Columbus because they can't be profitable there. Or the owner will sell to someone who has deeper pockets and doesn't mind the financial burden placed on them.
I don't think the city of Columbus will pay for it.
Even if Nationwide dropped their rent to zero dollars (Vs the 12 million they are paying now) the Jackets still struggle to make a profit. The market they are in isn't a good one, plain and simple.
